Rust is the result of the corrosion process in metals, which can reduce the strength, functionality, and service life of the material. An environmentally friendly treatment solution is needed. This study aims to determine the percentage of rust that can be removed by a pineapple peel ecoenzyme solution from corroded S45C steel and to analyze the role of acetic acid content in the dissolution process of iron rust (Fe?O?).
The research method employed was a simple experiment involving the production of pineapple peel ecoenzyme through fermentation for approximately 3 months, the formation of rust on S45C steel using a 4% salt solution for 144 hours, followed by rust dissolution testing using 10 mL of ecoenzyme with a 2.65% acetic acid concentration.
The results showed that the mass of rust formed ranged from 0.1573 grams to 0.172 grams, while the acetic acid content in the ecoenzyme was stoichiometrically capable of dissolving a maximum of 0.118 grams of rust. Rust removal efficiency was 68.6% for sample 1 and 75.0% for sample 2. The difference is due to the influence of the initial rust mass in each sample.
It can be concluded that pineapple peel ecoenzyme has the potential to be used as an environmentally friendly natural rust-removing solution because the acetic acid content in pineapple is capable of dissolving rust through the formation of compounds that are more easily soluble in water.
